What Instagram Notes are

Instagram Notes are short text posts, up to 60 characters, that show up in a bubble above your profile picture. People see them at the top of the inbox in Instagram messaging and on your profile. That's the whole feature.

You can have one note at a time. It stays up for 24 hours. You choose who sees it: followers you follow back, or your Close Friends, and anyone in that group can like it or reply, with each reply opening a private chat between the two of you in your inbox. Think of a note as a status line that invites a DM.

How to leave a note on Instagram

Here is how to post one in the Instagram app on iPhone, as Instagram's help article describes it. Android is nearly identical.

1. Tap Messages (the paper-plane icon) at the bottom of the app.
2. Tap your profile picture at the top of your inbox.
3. Type a note of up to 60 characters. You can also mention someone, tap Add music for a song clip, add a GIF, or add your location.
4. Choose who sees it: Followers you follow back or Close friends.
5. Tap Share.

You can also start from your profile. Tap your profile picture there and follow the same steps, but keep in mind that notes with a GIF or a video show up only in the inbox, never above your picture on your profile.

Changed your mind? Tap the note and choose Leave a new note; the new one replaces the old one. To take it down early, tap it and choose Delete note.

Most notes get scrolled past. The ones that get replies have a hook.

Ask something. "Best pizza place near Bandra?" or "What are you watching this weekend?" gets answers, because replying feels like a favour rather than small talk. Or share a song clip.
